There are caps on cable and DSL bandwith, but unless you're downloading a bunch of Torrents the average household won't come close to reaching them.

I do like mobile broadband while traveling, and I've even run the office off of the Sprint card using a Cradlepoint router for a few days waiting on cable repairs. It's fast enough, just not as fast as cable/fiber/copper.

We have hurricanes in Houston, and when a storm hits the cell phone towers are instantly overloaded unless you're using SMS. It's nice to have a real landline sometimes.

Interesting to read what's happening in the US and the providers trying to tempt you to leave dsl. I enjoyed your post.

In the UK a lot of providers provide monthly limits on (a)dsl connections and if you want more you pay more and the same often goes for speed levels. Though the speeds are varying hugely across the UK due to legacy infrastructure, and we still have pockets who have to rely on 56k dial up, satellite projects etc. Cable supplied primarily by Virgin again isn't available to all and when I was a customer with the firm NTL who Virgin brought in the UK, it wasn't that great anyway.

Mobile phone tarrifs are scary prices still and the connectivity although okay, can again vary hugely depending on your provider. For now high speed mobile connections in the UK can be frustrating if your travel a lot and for home use for the majority not even a consideration.

The days of disconnecting your landline in the UK are not really here either.

Wow, thanks for mentioning Cheap Eats In Houston and it's Twitter account, Htowncheapeats . I'm glad that it's provided some suggestions that you may not have already known about... and if it saved you a little money, that's even better! Thanks again.

I didn't think I'd miss my home phone. When I took out the landline a few years back I had (and still have but rarely use) VOIP, which was fine as long as the call didn't drop. Then I just went to a cell phone, which was fine except for after Ike and the system was overloaded.

Once AT&T dangled a super cheap landline in front of me, it was easy to come back. Plus I no longer have to deal with "Why does your phone keep cutting out?" when I call my mom. Because whether it was VOIP or cell, *that's* when the call would drop.

I'm with AT&T and am using the HTC Kaiser (AT&T Tilt). I also have a Blackberry (data only plan) for work - and when I'm on vacation, I can throw it in a drawer and forget it :) The Tilt last month ran up 97 meg of data. For the first time ever I actually went OVER my 400 mins/month but most of those were work-related. I don't text a ton, but I do have an "unlimited" plan. There are guys on XDA-developers.com who've ported the g1 OS over to these Kaisers. I may try that just to see what it's like. And I've never had a home phone.

Thanks! I'm joining the Mattress Firm team to ride the Houston to Austin MS150 in April. The training for that pretty much starts now.

Hope all went well in Warrenton!
